Information on Foreign Languages Exams
Dear Graduate Students,
The following are some guidelines regarding the foreign language exams, which I hope you will find useful. Two foreign languages, usually German and French, are needed for Ph.D., and just one (any of the two) for M.A. They are usually taken in our department, administered by me. Before taking the exam, you should practice translating academic texts in your field (Arabic, Biblical Studies, Egyptology, etc.) from German/French, using a dictionary if needed, until you reach a reasonable proficiency level. When you are ready to take the exam, please contact me by email a few days before. I am normally on campus from 11:00 a.m. Please also indicate which language (French or German) and and your academic field. The exam's texts are unseen, about two pages long and it usually takes about three hours to complete. The exam will be in your general area and you may use a dictionary. The exam may be handwritten (but must be legible). Or you may use a computer. Our SAO, Jay True , will provide you with one. Please arrange for it with her.
It may take about a week to check the exam and you will be notified of the result. If you have any further questions, please contact me sabar@humnet.ucla.edu or drop by my office
(376C Humaniteis Building).
Cheers,
Yona Sabar
